Probably because I haven't had the pleasure of driving a Jaaaaaag but my earlier spotting of a tasty S-Type R got me looking at prices. Then I saw this..

Kinja'd!!!

I believe this one comes from an XK but the S-Type has similar. A: thats pretty funky. B: How does this work? More so why are we shifting from D (1st) to 5th then up forward to 2nd, passing through 4th and 3rd?

The J Gate was designed to that you could, at any given time enter manual mode (much like a tiptronic...but weird and "Jaggy") So it'd make sense that a transmission would put you in the highest gear first so that if you were on the highway going 80 you weren't suddenly in 2nd.

All you do is push down on the D, and it swings over to the 5 and then you can shift between 2-5 but not 1st because that'd be uncouth and unfit for a British gent.

Push down and watch it impersonate a spring!

Haven't thought about those in a while. The magazines hated them when they came out. It was like first gen i-Drive levels of bitching.

But... but what if I want to be a privileged hooligan and always be in manual mode? If stopped I'd have to wait to get to 5th gear speed before shifting through the upper gears or just not have 1st and my lowest be second. Now I understand why Jag's are so Jaggy.

You push the S and you put it in 2nd and you watch your transmission do it's best impersonation of 1st in 2nd.

And no, you can put it in D to accelerate and then put it in 2nd, you don't have to worry about 5th or anything. It's really not that hard.

ow, I try not to. I just let the D enter things without much resistance

Also known as the Randle Handle after Jim Randle, the Jaguar engineer who came up with it.

Makes my left and right slapstick trans seem so much easier... but a lot less cooler.

When you stop it probably defaults to 1st anyway. These 'manual' modes are often just hypothetical. In my dads truck if I come to a stop while in manual mode, 2nd gear it shifts down to 1st automatically.

Thats what mine does. So I take it you'd go to 2nd, start off the line, it would autoshift to 2nd then the rest is up to you. Makes sense.

When you put an automatic transmission in a certain gear, it is limited to using that gear or lower (unless it has a manual valve body). So, assuming that is a 5 speed transmission, being in D and being in 5 are the same thing. This probably explains why it goes D to 5 and not D to 2, since the latter has the potential to wreck the trans. Also, it explains how the car can drive normally without a setting for first gear.

I think the J-gate was kind of a medium deal in the early 2000s? I remember some movie chase scene where the guy threw it into...J-mode? and then proceeded to...J-shift? all over the place. It was very...Je ne sais quoi.
